They have about 500 hectares in total for coffee farming. That’s about 1200 acres in gringo speak. Of that, about 250 hectares (625 acres) encompasses Fincas Tehuya, El Balsamo and this offering, Santa Clara. The family also produces avocado, macadamia nuts and honey for selling at the local markets.

They are producing many coffee varietals: Caturra, Tekesic, Gesha, Castillo, Venecia, Marsellesa, Icatu, Bourbon, Bourbon 300, and Castillo varieties. The Icatu and Castillo are rust resistant which is good since this leaf rust called La Roya is harmful to coffee plants. It can also be lethal if it gets out of control. La roya is a fungus that travels through the air so it can move from one plant to another as well as one farm to another.

Being near three volcanoes can produce rich soil but they also have a local tree called the chalum to help provide shade. Volcanic rich soil can sometimes be very hot, radiating heat upward so shade can be essential for healthy coffee tree growth. The chalum trees also produce good amounts of nitrogen which are very nutritious for the soil, therefore allowing the coffee trees to thrive.

The chalum tree along with macadamia trees and another local tree called the Grabilaya tree are also used for shade. The area’s fertile volcanic soils and elevated terrain—ranging between 1,800 and 2,100 meters above sea level—provide ideal conditions for cultivating high-quality Arabica coffee.

Established in 1963, the same year Kenya gained independence, Gachatha Factory has long been a part of the country’s coffee heritage. Originally operating under the Giant Tetu Farmers’ Cooperative, it became independent in 1999 with the formation of the Gachatha Farmers’ Cooperative Society. Today, the cooperative brings together more than 1,500 active smallholder farmers, each contributing carefully grown coffee cherries from small plots of land. These producers are encouraged to adopt sustainable agricultural practices that minimize environmental impact while preserving quality.

The coffee is composed of a blend of well-known Kenyan varieties, including SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11,

SL28, originally selected in the 1930s, is especially valued for its drought tolerance and complex, sweet profile with wine-like undertones. SL34, another historic selection, is admired for its rich body and balanced acidity, though it requires careful management due to its susceptibility to disease.

Ruiru 11 offers high yields and strong disease resistance.

Processing at Gachatha follows the fully washed method, a technique that emphasizes clarity and precision in the final cup. After being handpicked at peak ripeness, cherries are delivered to the factory, where they are sorted to remove defects before pulping. The beans, still coated in mucilage, are then fermented in concrete tanks for 12 to 24 hours, depending on temperature conditions. Following fermentation, they are thoroughly washed in fresh water—often sourced from nearby rivers—and may be soaked for up to 24 hours during peak harvest periods. This additional soaking step is believed to enhance the coffee’s brightness and overall cleanliness.

Drying takes place on raised beds, where the parchment is spread evenly and turned regularly to ensure consistent moisture reduction. Workers carefully manage exposure to sun and shade, covering the coffee during the hottest hours and protecting it at night. Depending on weather conditions, drying can take anywhere from 5 to 21 days before the coffee is fully stabilized and ready for milling.

Tasting Notes: cherry, sweet pineapple, lime

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0798/8035/6068/files/1kenya-nyeri-coffee-cherries-ripening.webp?v=1781567148
rwanda-kinini-village
Rwanda Kinini Village

From our friends at Crop to Cup Coffee. “Kinini” translates loosely as “this big thing right here,” an apt name for one of the most ambitious and unconventional coffee projects we’ve encountered. Founded in 2014 by Jacqueline Turner, it began by leasing unused land, distributing free seedlings, and paying farmers for several years while trees matured. Once production began, farmers retained 100% of cherry payments and earned quality bonuses, with centralized processing at the Kinini washing station providing consistency, traceability, and access to market.

Today, Kinini brings together hundreds of smallholder farmers north of Kigali, roughly 85% of them women. Gender equity training—led by Seraphina, Kinini’s farmer liaison—led to the formation of women-led sub-groups within Kinini Village, the farms closest to the washing station. These groups organize collectively, reinvest premiums into their farms, and advocate for shared needs within the cooperative.

Tasting Notes: Cola, black tea, honey, tamarind, lemon, caramel.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0798/8035/6068/files/1rwanda-kinini-village-coffee-origin.webp?v=1781566880
