This fabulous Ethiopian lot is from our import partner, Crop to Cup! We sometimes partner with other roasters or importers to procure coffees when we do not have direct relationships with the growers. This is one of those lots!
Bekele Yutute’s brother-in-law manages his farm in Kokose, which was the 5th place winner in the Cup of Excellence in2021—a lot named after his nephew, Samuel, who manages Bekele’s Kokose drying station. At his farm, he grows primarily 74158, common to the quality-focused farms around Bensa. Like at his other drying station near Dembe—where he was born into a family of coffee growers—Bekele produces dry processed coffee at his Kokose site, which he purchased in 2019. He used to sell coffee to local suppliers before obtaining his export license in 2021, exclusively producing dry processed coffees (traditional naturals and anaerobic) for export to the U.S. and Korean specialty markets. This is our first import from Bekele Yutute.
Ethiopia is a coffee powerhouse. It's the birthplace of the plant, the seventh largest producing country in world, and one of the world’s leading consumers of coffee as well. Because coffee is such a vital part of the economy in Ethiopia, the government has a hand in it, making for an interesting coffee context. Ethiopia is proudly a nation that has never been colonized, and the longtime government has been from a tribal minority (the Tigray). In 2018 there was a coup that installed an Oromo president - the largest tribe in Ethiopia. Its namesake region, Oromia, sprawls awkwardly south and west from the capital city Addis Ababa - and covers the majority of coffee territory in Ethiopia
